Our Sensory Gardens

Making use of space outdoors to help provide a safe space for those who need it.

Making a Difference

Sensory gardens are often seen as a nice‑to‑have — but the reality is, they are vital for many people.

Sensory gardens are a wonderful way to transform an outdoor space big or small into a multi-sensory environment providing stimulation, relaxation, and exploration for people of all ages and abilities. Our specially designed spaces cater to a wide range of sensory needs, providing an inclusive and joyful environment for everyone.

What is a Sensory Garden?

A sensory garden is a well thought-out space that stimulates and engages our five senses: TOUCH ~ TASTE ~ SIGHT ~ SOUND ~ SMELL and by using natural elements such as flowers, plants, trees, whilst combining some sensory outdoor equipment and toys.

When we plan a sensory garden, we will consider who the space is for ensuring that it offers something suitable for all ages, and abilities. For additional needs, such as autism, sensory gardens can include specialised features like textured pathways, interactive musical instruments, and calming water features which help provide a calming, engaging, safe environment.

For guests with reduced mobility, sensory gardens create a welcome and fun change of scenery, offering an immersive environment where they can engage with nature in a safe and accessible way. Raised flower beds, accessible seating areas, and sensory features designed to be enjoyed without the need for strenuous movement help make these spaces more inclusive.

Sensory gardens also have therapeutic benefits of just being in an outdoor setting with fresh air and some gentle movement which can reduce feelings of agitation and distress. Sensory elements like specific scents or tactile experiences can provide comfort and familiarity, helping to support overall well-being.
